Getting Started — Quick Overview (h2)
Congratulations — you have a Trezor hardware wallet in hand. This document explains the official, secure way to set up your device: verify the package, connect and install firmware if asked, initialize the device with a PIN and recovery backup, and then use Trezor Suite or supported wallets to manage coins. The goal is simple: keep your private keys offline, confirm transactions on the device display, and back up recovery securely.
Step 1 — Unbox & Verify (h3)
Inspect the packaging for tamper-evidence. Never use a device if the seal or accessories look altered. If anything seems off, contact official support before proceeding. When in doubt, check the official support and guides on trezor.io for up-to-date safety checks.
What to check (h4)
- Package integrity and original contents
- Model markings (Model One, Model T, etc.)
- Do not install random firmware from unknown sources
Tip (h5)
Keep the purchase receipt and serial/box info until setup completes. Register or store minimal identifying info offline.
Step 2 — Connect & Install (h3)
Plug the device into your computer and follow the guided flow at the official start page or Trezor Suite. The interface will prompt firmware installation if the unit ships without firmware. Firmware should only be installed via the official interface and signed updates.
Important security note
Only use official trezor.io pages and Trezor Suite for firmware & setup. Avoid third-party installers and never reveal your recovery seed to anyone or to websites.
Step 3 — PIN & Recovery (h3)
Choose a strong PIN (but not one you might later forget). The device will show the recovery (seed) words on its screen or let you generate them. Write them down physically on paper or a metal backup; do not store the seed in any digital file or cloud service.
Recovery best practices
- Record the seed on two separate offline backups
- Store backups in different physical locations (e.g., safe, deposit box)
- Consider a metal backup for long-term durability
Step 4 — Use Trezor Suite or a Supported Wallet (h3)
After setup, the recommended experience is Trezor Suite (desktop/web) to manage coins, transaction history, and firmware updates. Alternatively, connect your device to a supported third-party wallet but confirm compatibility and security practices.
Operational Security (h2)
Use the device on clean, trusted computers. Keep firmware up to date via official updates. Beware of phishing sites—always verify the URL and SSL certificate, and prefer typed URLs or bookmarks to reach official pages.
